i-Size vs Group System

i-Size (R129) is the latest EU car seat regulation based on your child's height rather than weight. i-Size seats must be rear-facing until at least 15 months and pass stricter side-impact tests. Group system (ECE R44/04) is the older weight-based standard (Group 0+, 1, 2, 3). Both are legal and safe, but i-Size offers enhanced protection. Many modern seats are dual-approved for both standards.

Complete Your Travel Setup

Pair your car seat with these essentials:

  • Car Seat Bases: ISOFIX bases for quick, secure installation of infant carriers
  • Car Mirrors: Rear-view mirrors to see your baby in rear-facing seats
  • Seat Protectors: Protect your car upholstery from marks and spills
  • Sun Shades: Window shades to protect baby from glare and UV rays
  • Travel Systems: Compatible prams and pushchairs for seamless car-to-stroller transitions

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between i-Size and Group car seats?

i-Size (R129) is the newer EU regulation based on your child's height (e.g., 40-105cm). It requires rear-facing until 15 months minimum, stricter side-impact testing, and ISOFIX installation. Group seats (ECE R44/04) are weight-based (Group 0+: 0-13kg, Group 1: 9-18kg, etc.) and allow forward-facing from 9kg. Both are legal and safe, but i-Size offers enhanced protection. Check your car's compatibility before buying.

How long should my child stay rear-facing?

As long as possible – ideally until at least 2-4 years old. Rear-facing is 5 times safer in a crash because it supports your child's head, neck, and spine. i-Size seats must be rear-facing until 15 months minimum, but many extend to 4 years (105cm). Only turn forward-facing when your child exceeds the seat's rear-facing height or weight limit, not just because they've reached the minimum age.

Do I need an ISOFIX car seat?

ISOFIX isn't mandatory, but it's highly recommended. ISOFIX anchor points click directly into your car's chassis, making installation faster, easier, and more secure than seatbelt installation. It virtually eliminates installation errors, which are common with seatbelt-fitted seats. Check if your car has ISOFIX points (usually between the seat cushions). If not, choose a seat approved for seatbelt installation.
